Italian Opera

When I was watching an Italian opera with English subtitle at the music class, I suddenly got one question.

"Can Italians understand this opera completely?"

For example, I don't understand the Japanese traditional dance-drama (like opera!) such as Noh or Kabuki without today's Japanese subtitle. The words they use are too old to be understood by today's Japanese. Like this, today's Italians may not understand Italian opera's words. (The opera we watched is almost 250 years old!)

Now, I really want to ask Italians about how much they understand their opera.

Good question! Sometimes I don't understand operas that are sung in English, because it is difficult sometimes to figure out sung words. Maybe it is just me. It would be interesting to see how many Italians understand all the Italian operas.

Oh, your comment reminded me that I also didn't understand some Japanese pop songs.
Sung words are somewhat difficult to understand.
